Free Money For College | Financial Aid For College

 A College Student

Whether you are a freshman working on your bachelors degree, or a graduate student pursuing your masters, you most likely will need some form of student aid and what could be better than free money for college?

Federal and private loans are available to help you pay your tuition, but loans affect your credit rating and have to be repaid. On the other hand, there are other ways to apply for free money for college. Scholarships and grants are great ways to help fund your college tuition.

Federal and state grants are essentially free money for college. Eligibility for receiving a federal grant depends on you and your family’s needs and are also given out on a first come, first granted basis. Sometimes states have grant programs that offer free money for college, and while these are also income-based grants, sometimes they are targeted towards individuals in a certain field.

If you don’t qualify for federal or state grant programs, schools and universities may also offer grants to highly desirable candidates or students. There are even certain grants intended for minorities and women who would like to get a college education but can’t afford to pay for it.

Free Money For College From Private Organizations

There are also many private foundations and other organizations that have grant programs, usually for fairly specific things. For example, companies often have grants available for those who plan on getting a degree within the field of study related to the company. Many charitable foundations offer grant programs to students who are also volunteers or for various other reasons.

Scholarships are available for students who exemplify excellence in a variety of fields or subjects and using scholarships to pay for college is a smart way to save money. Unlike private or federal loans, your scholarships do not require repayment and are usually merit based. This type of financial aid is highly advantageous for talented students who have a passion for academics or the arts, but do not qualify for loans or have not been awarded a grant. Athletic scholarships are one of the most common forms of scholarships, but organizations also offer scholarships to students who demonstrate high academic standards. Set up a meeting with your academic adviser today to find out about any scholarships they are aware of that you would qualify for.

Don’t limit yourself to only one type of financial aid, by the way. There is nothing that says you are only allowed one grant or one scholarship. Often, the best way to get your college education funded is to apply and obtain a bunch of smaller grants or scholarship awards. Too many think of only finding the one thing that will cover their entire costs but that is rare. Instead you should be applying for every single grant and scholarship that you can find where you might possibly qualify.

While there is plenty of free money for college available, it is not always easy to find these programs. Many grant programs, in particular, are not advertised so they may be hard to find out about. It may take some diligence to research all of the available ways to get free money for college but it will be worth it when you find the funds and get your degree.
