College Scholarships For Women
Most of us remember a mom, aunt, friend’s mom, or some other woman from our childhood who was able to stay at home instead of participating in the traditional workforce. While she may have had an odd job here are there when times got tough, her main job was being a homemaker. This is simply not the case anymore. It takes two incomes to keep most families financially afloat and, because of this, more and more women are going to college to get a degree that will allow them to help support their family. For women who are already adults though going back to school can be a challenge, in large part due to time and money. That is why it’s important to find college scholarships for women.

Finding College Scholarships For Women
Most women who are considering college choose careers in healthcare or education. To find scholarships in these areas, there are a variety of methods to choose from. First, you can go to a website such as College Scholarships.org which has been helping women and others to find relevant scholarships since 1999. You can search for scholarships by subject, state, student type, gender, minority or by the level of degree you want. This site is an excellent resource, and it is very user friendly.
If you are majoring in a field other than healthcare or education, it is even easier for you to find and apply for scholarships for women because there will be less competition. The American Association of University Women sponsors a Selected Professions Fellowship for women pursuing graduate or post graduate work in traditionally masculine fields. These fellowships range from $5,000 to $20,000. For women just starting out in the computer sciences field, The Society of Women Engineers awards scholarships to undergraduates. Those are just two of the many scholarship opportunities available for women.
Another good website to find scholarships on is Scholarships.com where you can search by type or gender. The lists on this website seem to us to be very comprehensive, with options for a variety of majors and degrees. Going to websites is not the only way to find scholarships though. Another way is to research big businesses you are interested in to see if they offer grants or scholarships. For example, many hospitals around the country offer tuition reimbursement programs for current employees; some require an agreement that the employee will continue with that hospital for a certain number of years in order to qualify for such programs.
Applying for College Scholarships
Once you have found some college scholarships for women that are relevant to your needs, you can start applying for them. While the application process may seem daunting at first, by taking it one step at a time you can knock it out in no time. The first thing to do is look over the whole application. If it requires any documentation other than what you fill out on the forms, go ahead and start gathering that information so that it will be ready to send in with your completed application. Next, check to see if any writing is required. The majority of scholarships require at least one essay, sometimes more, explaining who you are, why you deserve the scholarship, and so on.
If you do not have confidence in your writing skills, do not despair. There are a multitude of websites you can visit to brush up on your grammar and punctuation skills. There are also sites you can visit to examine example articles. One of the most important actions we recommend during the writing process is proofreading and revising. In addition to just running spell check in your Word document, read over it yourself and have someone else read it. We sometimes miss errors in our own writing because we know what we meant to say, so letting someone else read it gives you fresh eyes and a fresh perspective so that you can ensure your essay is the best it can be.
There are so many opportunities out there for women that you should never accept defeat or settle for less than the scholarship type and amount that you want. Remember though that you can win more than one scholarship as long as each is provided by different organizations, so don’t be afraid to apply for more than one. It is always better to have too much money available than not enough. Follow these tips for finding and applying for college scholarships for women and you will be well on your way to reaching your career goals one college degree at a time.
